An Unforgettable Adventure: Sonoma Hot Air Balloon Classic
Share
This past weekend at the Santa Rosa Fairgrounds, the Sonoma County Hot Air Balloon Classic celebrated its 32nd event, and what an adventure it was!
The gates opened at 4 AM, and my dad and I arrived at 5:15 AM, just in time to experience the magic of the Glow Show. As the sky was still cloaked in darkness, the balloon crews fired up their propane tanks, igniting flames that made the balloons glow brilliantly against the night sky. The sight was nothing short of breathtaking!
The fairgrounds buzzed with excitement as families and friends gathered, either lounging on blankets or seated in lawn chairs, eagerly watching the spectacle unfold. Surrounding the grassy area were vendors offering charming hot air balloon trinkets, beautiful decorations, and delicious food and hot drinks to keep everyone warm.
We set up our blanket on the other side of the field, ready for the anticipated balloon launch at 6:30 AM. About ten balloons were poised for takeoff, with two offering “tethered” rides for those wanting a taste of the skies, and one balloon positioned sideways with a fan blowing air into it, inviting attendees to walk inside and capture unforgettable photos.
Although the foggy weather prevented the group launch, the sight of all the balloons standing together was still an incredible experience. Once the balloons were upright, attendees were allowed onto the field to chat with the crews, ask questions, and marvel at the intricate baskets. Standing beside the balloons as they blasted hot air into their envelopes was thrilling!
Despite the early wake-up call, the Glow Show alone made the adventure worthwhile. It's a unique and magical experience that we'll definitely revisit in the coming years, hoping for clearer skies to witness the full spectacle of balloons taking flight.
If you're visiting the Napa-Sonoma area, add the Sonoma Hot Air Balloon Classic to your bucket list. Plan your trip around this extraordinary event and prepare for an adventure you'll never forget.
Pro Tip:
It’s usually pretty chilly in the morning, so dress warmly and bring a chair or a blanket to sit on, as the grass can be a bit damp.
